Real Faith, Real Men

This event is all about real faith, real discipleship, real courage, real men.

What’s it About

The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius once said, ‘let men see, let them know, a real man, who lives as he was meant to live.’

I don’t know how you would define a real man. There have been many attempts. Thomas Paine once said that ‘the real man smiles in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection.’ Henry Ward Beecher reflected, ‘the real man is one who always finds excuses for others but never excuses himself.’ More recently, Miranda Hart mused that ‘a real man can go out with a woman taller than he is. That’s an alpha male right there.’

Many men have tried to summarise what a real man is and all the while women have been waiting. As Chrissie Hinde, lead singer of the band the Pretenders once pleaded, ‘Show me a real man now! Where are they?’

‘Real,’ is reachable. Real is raw and at the same time redemptive. Real is honest and at the same time hopeful. Real is transparent and at the same time triumphant. Real is the prime characteristic of heroes not celebrities. Real is not touched up or airbrushed. Real is naked truth.

As men we are called to fight daily to keep and indeed to share the freedom that Christ won at the Cross. The whole of creation is waiting for men like this. The planet is pining for the revelation of the sons of God – for the appearance on the earth of men who truly know what it is to be set free from the downward pull of sin and death, men who are upwardly mobile in the aerodynamic lift of the Spirit’s power. This is the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and lifted Him high into the Heavenly realms, where He sits with His Father in glory. The Spirit has infinite, immense, incomparable power. It’s grave-busting and death-defeating power. It is the kind of power that cuts through chains like a red hot blade through butter.

The whole world is waiting for such men.

Wives are waiting.

Sons and daughters are waiting.

Orphans and widows are waiting.

Troubled teens are waiting.

Slaves and refugees are waiting.

Let the real men arise!
